The question is often asked: Can I take my pet gerbil on a walk?

  1. Now, if you mean can you put on a leash and walk your gerbil around like a dog, then the simple answer is no.
  2. If you mean can you carry your gerbil and go for a walk with him/her, then yes!

Now here are some basic guidelines that will keep your gerbil safe during a walk with him:

  • Have a travel cage or carrier: You probably do not want to take your pet gerbil out on a walk with you in your hands, the gerbil could easily scram away and get lost to never be found again. However, if you keep your gerbil in a travel carrier made especially for rodents/gerbils/hamsters this will not be a problem for as long as the cage door is closed and the cage is properly put together.

  • NEVER keep a gerbil in direct sun: Keeping a caged gerbil in direct sun is like keeping a dog in a car with no open wndows on a hot summer day. Make sure not to keep your gerbils outside too long and to always keep them in the shade.

  • Remove the water bottle from the cage: Water bottles leak and can harm the gerbil from an ecess of water. However, you do not want to keep your gerbils without water for too long, no more then an hour at the most.

  • Ensuring a place to hide: When taking your pet gerbil for a walk you want to ensure your gerbil has a place to hide, quickly changing surroundings and movment can scare your gerbil quite easily. Puting in a handful of bedding, wrinkled paper, paper tube etc. Do not put heavy objects in the cage, if these move quickly when walking you could squish and injure your little pet gerbil friend.
